What happens when you are forced to work from home because of Evil Chronic Fatigue and you decide to fill your down time learning to cook? Well first you realize that you only know how to make scramble eggs and French toast and Martha Stewart you are not! 😉 So you start to watch some cooking shows. You pull out some cooking books that have been shoved into drawers and you slowly learn how to make the basic stuff like spaghetti sauce, casseroles, and stir fry. But then you get bored and you find yourself searching allrecipes.com and trying to find weird stuff to make to keep yourself entertained. You learn to make Green Portuguese soup, Cuban stew and Gypsy soup. As you go you need to find a new challenge so you dive into making, from scratch cookies, cupcakes, cakes and zucchini bread. Then you move onto making your own pie crust and pies. You soon learn how to make cream puffs and fancy apple tarts. Then one day you complain to your husband that you figured out the whole baking thing, now what? One day he comes home with a book on how to make Jams and Jelly.
If you would have told me four years ago that I would be making homemade jam I would have laughed my ass off. When I first got married a zillion years ago I told my husband – I’m not a domestic diva. I hope you like soup from a can and sandwiches for dinner. 😉 But here I am today making jam.
Behold – a batch of Cat’s Meow Jalapeno Raspberry jam I made last night.
Yes I actually gave my jams the name Cat’s Meow and I make my own labels. I am that dorky. Did I mention that hardly anyone makes their own jam these days? Yep in the town I live in the only people making jam is yours truly and some ninety year old woman.
Oh and of course last year I got bored again and I branched out into making relish and sweet pickles. Cat’s Meow—Jam, jelly, relish and pickles. There’s a cupboard full of the stuff. 😉
